Brazil’s football hero, Ronaldinho, 39, was arrested in Paraguay for allegedly entering a fake passport into the South American country.

Theformer Barcelona player was detained at the Paraguayan Resort Yacht & Golf Club together with his brother Roberto de Assis, 49 on Wednesday night, Paraguay’s Ministry of Interior has reported.

“Mr. Ronaldinho has a misspelled passport. That is a felony and that’s why he was requested to be arrested,” Interior Minister Euclides Acevedo told AM 1080 local radio station in Paraguay. “I admire his success in sport, but no matter who you are, the rule needs to be respected.”

In a press conference on Thursday morning, local time, Acevedo said an investigation was “ongoing,” adding that more details would be shared with the public.

Passports were found in the hotel bearing the names of Ronaldinho and Roberto and with Paraguayan nationality, pending confiscation of their Brazilian passports in 2018 following prosecution in an environmental offence, according to La Nación.

In2015, Ronaldinho and his brother were arrested without proper licensing for building an illegal fishing trap in a protected lake area and had their Brazilian passports revoked in 2018 along with a $8.5 million fine.

Thewinner of the 2002 World Cup which retired from football in 2018 is currently without a passport from Brazil.
