The US forces reportedly killed General Qasem Soleimani in Iraq, leader of the Quds Force unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

The Pentagon confirmed he was killed “at the direction of the president”.

Gen Soleimani was driving alongside the local Iranian militias by car on Baghdad Airport when a US air strike hit him.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who said “severe revenge awaits the criminals” behind the attack and he also announced three days of mourning.

Gen Soleimani, 62, was one of Iran’s greatest leaders. His Quds Force reported directly and he was praised as a national heroic figure to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

But the United States called terrorists the commander and the Quds Force and blamed them for the deaths of hundreds of US personnel.

After the news broke, US President Donald Trump tweeted a US flag image.

Reports from the U.S. media say Gen Soleimani and Iranian officials left Baghdad in two carriages as they were hit by a US drone strike in the area around the cargo area.

It is reported that the commander had flown from Lebanon or Syria. The convoy is reportedly struck by several missiles and it was thought that at least five people had died.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis was among those killed.
